A Camden County woman has been jailed after deputies said she dragged her dog behind her truck and then stole the dog from the animal hospital that was treating its wounds.

Amy Sikes, 42, is accused of animal cruelty and theft of services.

Deputies were dispatched after Sykes' vehicle was spotted dragging a dog on Aug. 13, an arrest report said.

Sikes told deputies that she wasn't paying attention and that the dog had jumped out of the bed of the truck. The animal was dragged over a quarter of a mile at a high rate of speed, the report said.

The report said that motorists tried to get Sikes' attention by flashing their lights and honking. She then pulled over.

The dog had injuries consistent with being dragged. A deputy immediately took the dog to be treated at nearby a veterinarians' office.

Not along afterwards, the report said, the animal hospital reported that Sykes had taken the dog and left without paying for its treatment. The dog was left without access to pain and anti-infection, the report said.

Deputies again made contact with Sykes and arrested her for theft, the report said.

The report noted that the dog was taken back to the animal hospital, where it will receive treatment free of charge.
