19-year-old armed with knives shot by officers

A man with several knives told police he was going to cut them and charged at an officer before he was shot twice outside a Jacksonville McDonald's early Saturday morning.

Cody Marsh, 19, was shot in the head and the arm. JSO said Monday that he died Sunday around 10 p.m.

A family member took Marsh to a shelter before the shooting because he'd been doing drugs.

Later Saturday morning, he called police and told them he'd been mugged at the McDonald's near Market Street and State Street.

A few minutes later, a McDonald's manager called officers and said a man with a knife was outside banging on the windows demanding to be let inside.

Officers got to the McDonald's and could not find Marsh.

They heard him yell from across the street. He told police he was going to kill them and cut their heads off, according to JSO.

The two officers formed a perimeter around the man and tried to get him to drop the knife and surrender.

Officers said he swung the knives and continued to threaten the officers, saying he would cut off their heads and throw knives at them.

When one officer moved closer to him to tighten the perimeter, Marsh raised a knife and charged at him.

The officer he charged at fired three times and another officer shot once.

Marsh fell to the ground and was arrested.

He was taken to UF Health and is in critical condition.

Officers said Marsh does not have a criminal history in Duval County but had been arrested in Clay after he took a airsoft gun to school

He had also been Baker Acted in the past.

The officers involved in the shooting are James M. White, a 8-year veteran who was involved in one officer-involved shooting in the past, and Jonathan D. Cochran, a 2-year veteran.
