JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Red Cross is helping eight families after their homes were burned in a Jacksonville apartment fire on Saturday.
Video shows heavy flames coming from the Matthew’s Crossing Apartments in Arlington. You can hear people frantically evacuating the apartments.
About 20 people were displaced by the fire. Gregory Brooks said he returned home from work to see the chaotic scene.
“It’s very unfortunate because you know, some people may not have anywhere to go,” Brooks said.
Brooks said he feels lucky because he lives in the apartment building right next to the one that burned.
“It was the whole, basically this whole area right here,” Brooks said. “They had to evacuate all of these apartments that were surrounded by it. So it was crazy last night.”
No one was hurt, but the damage is visible from the outside.
People were collecting their belongings from the charred apartments on Sunday.
“It’s kind of scary because it could have been my building,” Brooks said. “You know I got valuable stuff in my apartment, so it really hit close to home.”
An investigation is underway to determine what caused the fire.
