"Armed and dangerous" couple sought in shooting with Georgia police officers

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — A search is underway for a couple involved in a shooting with police northeast of Atlanta in Hall County.

Gainesville police say the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Friday following a 911 call about a man dragging a female down the road.

The couple, Marcos Tovar and Alondra Rodriguez, both 20 years old, reportedly began fighting with the first officer who arrived on the scene.

Police say that while Tovar was involved in a physical altercation with the officer, Rodriguez approached him from behind and pistol-whipped him in the head with a gun.

One or both of the suspects reportedly shot at a backup officer as he arrived on scene. Police say that officer was not struck but did shoot back at the couple.

Tovar and Rodriguez were able to get away. They are wanted for aggravated assault on a peace officer and are considered by police to be "armed and dangerous."

The officers were transported to the hospital where they were treated and released for unspecified injuries.

Gainesville Police released a statement thanking the community for support and saying, "This is a sad and all too often reminder of the dangers our officers face on a daily basis."

Federal and state agencies are helping with the investigation.
