Best friend of Nassau County teen crash victim: ‘It just didn't feel real'

The best friend of a Fernandina Beach teen who died in an early-morning crash says Meghan Knight had just left her boyfriend's house when she was hit and killed.

Knight, who turned 19 an hour before the crash, was killed when her Honda Civic was struck head-on on U.S. 17 in Yulee by a Nissan Maxima driven by Matt Cisco, 25. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Cisco’s Nissan crossed the center line — for an unknown reason — and hit Knight’s car.

Both vehicles were destroyed by the impact. Knight died at the scene; Cisco died later at a Jacksonville hospital.

Knight worked at the Ritz-Carlton in Amelia Island and was also a student with dreams of a career in the medical field.

Kirsten Vroman, Knight’s best friend, had just texted her friend happy birthday.

“It just didn't feel real, because today is her birthday,”  Vroman said. “Life's too short. I feel like sometimes we don't understand the plan. She was just a very loving and kind person. Everybody just loved her so much.

“Best friends is like an understatement. We were basically sisters.”

Vroman said Knight’s beloved grandmother had recently died.

“She always talked about if she could just see her one more time …. so it makes me happy she can see her again, and that she can be with her,” Vroman said.
