JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A precautionary boil-water advisory notice has been issued for the San Marco area after a water main break.
JEA issued the boil-water notice Monday morning for the general San Marco area.
The water main break was reported Sunday night on Landon Avenue.
Dozens of JEA crews have been working to tackle a defective 24-inch pipe buried about 6 feet deep. Resident Penny Johnson said crews have been focusing on breaking through the asphalt to remove soil and concrete surrounding the three pipes that lie underneath a street.
“They’ve been digging for hours and they haven’t been able to get to the source of the problem,” said Johnson.
JEA said the leaking 24-inch pipe is underneath 30-inch and 20-inch pipe. Mitchell Bell, who lives a few feet away from the water main break said the street was under about 8 inches of water on Sunday.
“It was thousands of gallons a minute, easily,” said Bell.
JEA is urging customers who lost water pressure to boil their water. Officials advise boiling water for a minimum of one minute before using it for drinking or cooking.
JEA doesn’t know when the pipe repairs will be complete.
Once the repairs are finished, another crew is scheduled to fill in the hole and repave the road.
