JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Durkeeville woman said a bullet came through her wall inches from where her 6-year-old son was sleeping overnight.
Police were first called out to Tyler Street for a report of shots fired just before 11 p.m. Wednesday, but they didn’t find any victims.
Less than an hour later, officers responded to a home at the corner of McConihe and Whitner streets after reports that a man was shooting into it. An officer located the suspect and chased after him.
Police said the man pulled a handgun out of his backpack and fired at the officer, who shot back five times. It's not believed the man or the officer were hit.
The woman, who didn’t want to be identified, said two bullets hit her home.
“My son could've been dead this morning,” she said.
She said one bullet went through the wall just above where her 6-year-old son, Clyde, was sleeping.
“I just took him off the bed, made sure he was alive and I took them all out the room,” she said. “I cried when I went to work, just thinking that could've been my son’s life over. I'm not blaming no one. I just want safety for my children.”
Hours later, SWAT responded and pulled several people from a home down the street, including one who initially refused to come out, police said. Police haven’t confirmed whether the suspect has been caught.
Neighbors said they saw a man in handcuffs being driven away in a squad car. It is not known if the man is the one involved in the shooting.
