Unidentified woman’s body found in Black Creek on Monday; locals say it’s a rare, shocking incident

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — On Monday, a woman’s body was found floating in the Black Creek in Middleburg. Clay County deputies say a kayaker found her on Monday and called police.

Black Creek stretches for about 13 miles, and police say the body was found along its North Fork.

Locals at a boat ramp that’s connected to Black Creek, where many kayakers and fishers were gathered, told Action News Jax it’s rare for something like this to happen.

Fisherman Virgil Greenlee said he’s been coming here a few times a week for over two years.

“Most times I come out here with my kids, I bring my kids out here fishing,” he said.

In his experience, it’s uncommon for an incident like this to happen.

“I’ve never (seen) anything suspicious, anybody suspicious,” he said. “It’s always family-oriented, so that’s why I come out here most times.”

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office Twitter account said the woman was wearing a thin, gold chain necklace with a distinctive cross.

Right now investigators are working to learn how the woman died, how long she had been in the river for, and how she ended up there.

They ask that anybody with information about the necklace give them a call.
