The community came together Thursday night to support the family of Aaliyah Lewis.
The 2-year-old died last Thursday after she was allegedly beaten by her mother's boyfriend.
A candlelight vigil was held for the toddler, who just celebrated her second birthday just weeks ago. At least fifty people attended the vigil.
Aaliyah turned 2 on April 11. The same family members who celebrated that birthday gathered to remember the little girl who lost her life too soon.
Aaliyah’s life was taken April 21. People gathered to remember a girl who for two years lit up the world. Flowers and teddy bears lined the street a memorial for Aaliyah.
“She was like an angel man, she keep you laughing. She liked to dance,” said Kenneth Barlow, Aaliyah’s grandfather.
It was an evening of emotion, a time to comfort.
"It was beautiful. I know Aaliyah would be so proud," said Bryanna Bartley, a cousin of Aaliyah's mother Donisha Barlow.
Old and young, celebrating a little girl gone but not forgotten.
The family said they’re currently in the process of planning Aaliyah’s funeral. They say it will happen next week.
Jamarius Graham, the boyfriend of Aaliyah’s mother, is behind bars on charges of child abuse. His next court date is in May.
