Councilwoman Kimberly Daniels proposes 9 p.m. curfew

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Action News is getting new details on a proposed plan to set a 9 p.m. curfew for local teens.

It is an effort to curb violence in the River City, but some say it is too restrictive.

"I believe it's a good start," said Councilwoman Kimberly Daniels.

Daniels said gangs and crime have invaded our city, and she believes something needs to be done.

"There's already a law in place for a curfew for children, it's called 'The Children's Curfew'," said Daniels.

Daniels said the current curfew of 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on weekends is not being enforced.

That's why she is suggesting this ordinance and resolution. It states teenagers across Jacksonville that are 18 and under should be in the house and off the streets by 9:00 p.m.

"I mean. this is so simple. It's a law that's telling parents you need to know where your children are. The ordinance is only temporary, just until we grab a hold on some things," Daniels said.

Candice Chappell lives in Jacksonville and doesn't feel any curfew will work, let alone 9:00 p.m.

"Right now, a curfew, if your mama can't keep you in the house, it's not going to happen," said Chappell.

But Daniels feels with a little effort from everyone, this proposal will make all the difference.

"It's got to work, because if it don't work, our city is in trouble," said Daniels.

The proposal will be introduced to city council committees in the next couple of weeks.
