Cross unharmed after tree snaps in half during Hurricane Irma

More than ten years ago, a Georgia family hung a cross on the tree where 28-year-old Angela Herndon died in a crash.

It served as a memorial for the Glynn County mother of three, but it pained her mom Lisa Lane to see it.

Herndon was not wearing a seatbelt when she crashed into the tree in Jan. 2007.

"That tree caused so much devastation in our lives," Lane said. "(It) took my 28-year-old daughter's life. I hated that tree."

Hurricane Irma brought heavy rain and strong wind to south Georgia Sept. 11 and the tree snapped in half, but the cross was unharmed.

It still hung on the tree, a foot below where the trunk snapped.

Lane said finding the cross unharmed sent a strong message.

"(I was) relieved that the tree was damaged, but to see the cross remaining was (a reminder) that God is with us," Lane said.

She and her daughter Rebecca took down the cross and family plans to keep it.
