MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — Investigators are looking for the gunman who shot a stray dog and left it to die in a Middleburg neighborhood.
The vets were able to save the dog, named Eastwood, and now he’s making a remarkable recovery.
Clay Humane Society Dr. Chris Broadhurst said Eastwood’s wound shows someone was likely standing over him when they shot him with a handgun.
“This is the entry wound right over the front of his shoulder. It went through the shoulder blade, the bullet broke apart and ended up lodging under the skin and in the muscles of his left arm here,” said Broadhurst.
At first, Broadhurst thought they’d have to amputate Eastwood’s leg.
“Day one, he couldn’t even stand up. But his tail sure did work. It was just wagging, wagging, wagging,” said Broadhurst.
Now Eastwood is walking again.
PHOTOS of Eastwood's injuries, remarkable recovery
Neighbors found the stray dog slumped in a Middleburg driveway.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said they still have no suspects.
“It’s twofold. It’s heartbreaking to see any animal suffering unnecessarily. But it’s also hopeful because he survived the injury to make it to us,” said Broadhurst.

Action News Jax has covered at least four other dogs and cats shot this year.
Last month, a Jacksonville Sheriff's officer's dog, named Hemingway, was shot during a burglary and survived.
A week before that, a Nassau County cat was killed with a bow and arrow.
In September, multiple cats were shot with a pellet gun in Baymeadows.
In May, a dog was shot and killed in its owner's front yard in downtown Jacksonville.
