Drivers say part of A1A in Yulee is causing damage to their cars

Drivers said a Nassau County road is a safety hazard and they are calling on the state to do something about it.

They said work on A1A between Rubin Davis Lane and O’Neill Scott Road is causing damage to their cars.

Construction stretches for about 5 miles on A1A in Yulee.

"A1A is a safety hazard no question. A1A poses a crisis to a lot of people in the community," driver Doug Adkins said.

According to the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization, nearly 40,000 vehicles travel A1A daily.

The state is spending $60 million dollars to widen A1A to six lanes, but drivers said the construction is doing more harm than good at this point.

"It's just damaging cars and making people upset," driver Autumn Davis said.

The project started in early 2016 and isn’t expected to be completed until the summer of 2019.

"It just looks like they haven't really planned it out, they haven't really thought about the people driving on the road," Davis said.

As construction continues, the current condition of the road is causing concern for drivers.

"It's clearly unraveling, clearly the road is falling apart," Adkins said.

A woman sent Action News Jax pictures of her car tires that had to be replaced after she said she drove on the road.

Other drivers said they’ve had similar issues.

"It has knocked my alignment out twice,” driver Morgan Mischler said.

Action News Jax spoke with a representative with the Florida Department of Transportation and was told the log trucks that drive through tear up the road.

FDOT said they are aware the road is in bad shape, but they said it is only temporary.

People can call to file a claim with FDOT if their car was damaged and a contractor would accept or deny it.

People are also encouraged to drive 45 miles per hour through the construction.
