Sept. 4 Update: JSO makes arrest in hit-and-run that killed motorcyclist
Family and friends are mourning the death of a Jacksonville man who was killed in a motorcycle crash on Saturday.
They’ve placed a roadside memorial for Dontai Locklear near the scene of the crash. Nearly 100 people attended a candlelight vigil and balloon release for him on Sunday evening.
The 28-year-old was riding his motorcycle along San Juan Avenue when his family says a driver pulled out of a convenience store parking lot and hit him.
They tell us the driver took off initially but returned later.
“He’s not going to wake up tomorrow and talk to his mom on the phone,” said Candice Wilson, a friend of Locklear’s. “He’s gone, we can’t ever see him again. You still have your life, you’re still here. You’re still breathing, you just left him there.”
While family and friends believe police detained that driver, they’re upset the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has not been more forthcoming about what happened.
“No name, no nothing,” said Lori Pope, Locklear’s godsister. “We need closure.”
JSO did not send out a release about Saturday’s crash. As of Sunday evening, questions to the agency about what happened have not been returned.
