JSO: Father charged with murder in toddler's death

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — The man accused in the death of his son made his first appearance Thursday morning in Duval County Court.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced late Thursday afternoon that Darien Head, 21, has officially been charged with the murder of his son.

JSO says a medical examiner ruled the toddler's death a homicide Thursday and the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

The boy's mother called his father a murderer in a post on Facebook.

Head is also charged with murder and child neglect, according to JSO.

Head is held on a bond totaling $600,000. He is expected back in court on Dec. 1.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office found toddler Amari Barnhill unresponsive at a residence Thursday on King Street. The boy later died at the hospital.

JSO said the boy had cuts and bruises on his head, face and legs. Police believe the injuries were made at different times.

Head's sister told Action News Jax that she believes there is an explanation for the incident.

"I just don't like it how everyone trying to make it seem like my brother is a monster. He is not a monster," Labrina Head said.
