ORLANDO, Fla. — Rodney Sumter, the Jacksonville man severely wounded in the June 12 shooting at Pulse Orlando, was released from the hospital Tuesday, his mother told Action News Jax.
Sumter was shot in both elbows and in his back in the shooting, which killed 49 people. He has been hospitalized since the shooting at Orlando Regional Medical Center since the attack and has received visits from Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Heisman Trophy winners Jameis Winston and Tim Tebow.
Sumter, a father of 10-year-old twins a girl and boy, had only recently started working at Pulse as a bartender. According to his family, Sumter will remain in the Orlando area for rehabilitation.
Sumter was a high school football star in Jacksonville and later excelled as a wide receiver at Jacksonville University.
A man named Josh McGill helped save Sumter's life by taking off his own shirt to make a tourniquet and then held him in the back of a police cruiser on the way to the hospital.
