Police: Jacksonville woman kidnaps 2-year-old, leaves her in dumpster

The grandmother of a 2-year-old who was kidnapped and thrown into a dumpster said the toddler is resting and doing well.

Police reports say Laquanna Thomas, 24, took a child from a home on Cartier Circle at approximately 9 p.m. on Thursday.

Action News Jax reporter Russell Colburn spoke with the girl’s grandmother, who said Thomas took the toddler from her home.

“I'm just panicking, crying, and I'm weak, a dialysis patient,” Sierra Cue said. “I just got out of hospital on Saturday.”

Cue said she was too weak to fight off the woman.

“She broke in my home and went and took my granddaughter, and also took some merchandise,” Cue said.

The family told police where Thomas normally hangs out, and officers found the child.

Police said an officer heard the little girl's cries from a dumpster a few blocks away and rescued her.

Cue said the suspect is her daughter's friend.

"I don't know why she would do that. I don't know. She was high on something," Cue said.

Cue said her family is grateful for Jacksonville Sheriff's Office quick response.

“She has no marks on her, and she's resting comfortably,” Cue said. “We do commend the Jacksonville police.”

Thomas was arrested and faces false imprisonment of a child, interference with custody and child neglect charges.
