Civil rights group calls for federal investigation into JSO officer-involved shooting

The Justice League United Inc. is calling for a full federal criminal and civil rights investigation into the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office-involved shooting of 22-year-old Vernell Bing Jr.

The shooting happened Sunday in Springfield. Police said Bing, a car theft suspect, was being pursued by police in a vehicle that had been reported stolen. Police said Bing led them on a high-speed chase and crashed into a JSO cruiser.

Bing, who police say was unarmed, was shot by Officer Tyler Landreville. Landreville fired his weapon five times, and one shot struck Bing in the head, JSO said. Bing died after being taken off life support by his family. Landreville still has not spoken to JSO about what happened during the shooting, but his attorneys have, JSO said.

Bing's family has said they are left wanting more answers. On Tuesday, protesters gathered near the site of the shooting and said they want an independent review of the shooting. The letter sent by The Justice League United Inc. also calls for an investigation not only into JSO, but into the State Attorney's Office.

"We are deeply troubled by the information we have learned concerning the leadership of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and the State Attorney's Office," the letter from Bobby Worthy, national president of the Justice League United reads.
