Man arrested in connection with Thanksgiving night shooting in Middleburg

A Clay County man is facing charges of attempted murder after a man was shot Thanksgiving night.

Witnesses are speaking out about what led up to the shooting of the 28-year-old, who is now in critical condition.

Neighbors said the victim went to a home on Racoon Run to see his child and was getting ready to walk home when he got into an argument with the suspect.

They say that's when things took a turn for the worse and the victim was shot.

Witnesses say many people tried to help the man until paramedics were able to arrive.

After Thanksgiving dinner, neighbors said an argument broke out in the middle of the sandy street.

A witness who doesn't want to be identified explained what she saw after a 28-year-old man was shot in the abdomen.

"I asked him if he could talk and he just shook his head no. He mouthed 'are they coming?' … as in the EMS," the witness said.

We did some research of Clay County online jail records and found the alleged suspect is Joshua Everett Magruder, who is being charged with second-degree attempted murder.

Neighbors said kids were feet away inside the house when the victim tried to walk away from this dispute.

"The girl that was out here had said they got into a small argument, but it was nothing serious and that he was walking home, so that they wouldn't argue," a neighbor said.

Many parents said the violence in our communities must stop.

"Using a gun isn't going to solve everything. It's going to cause problems for yourself in the long run."

Some neighbors have lived here for a decade and they tell me they've never seen anything like this. Magruder is expected to make his first court appearance Saturday.
