JSO: Man shoots himself at Jacksonville park after argument

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office’s homicide unit said a man shot himself in Mandarin’s Greenland Park after hitting a pedestrian with a car on Monday.

“It is a little bizarre,” JSO homicide unit Sgt. David Smith said. It happened shortly after 1 p.m. on a dirt road by the baseball fields.

JSO said a man in his mid-30s drove his white Mitsubishi into the park, then got out of his parked car and started arguing with two people. JSO said he returned to his car, got a gun, then continued the argument and vandalized one person’s white Honda.

“He returned to his vehicle, which is a white Mitsubishi, and accelerated into a second vehicle, a parked burgundy Ford Expedition, causing it to move sideways and accidentally striking one of the victims who was standing nearby,” Smith said.

Smith said the man then got out of his car, walked a short distance away, and shot himself in the head. The pedestrian he hit was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Smith said he would not speculate about why those three people were in the park or whether they knew each other before the argument began.
