Man tells Jacksonville police dog jumps on nightstand, shoots girlfriend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man told police that his dog was responsible for shooting his girlfriend while she was sleeping on Tuesday night in Jacksonville.

Jacksonville police responded to the reported shooting at a home in the 2200 block of Patou Drive at approximately 11:25 p.m.

Brian Murphy told Jacksonville police that his dog, Diesel, woke him up.

He said he let Diesel outside then they returned to the bedroom.

Murphy said the room was completely dark. He said Diesel walked into the room first, then he saw a flash and heard a bang.

Murphy said he believes "Diesel jumped up on the night stand where his gun was sitting and it went off shooting Summer in the right leg."

Woman, dog injured in pit bull attack in Jacksonville

Summer Miracle told police she was asleep and wasn't sure how she was shot.

She was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
