Installation emergency management officer Steve Millican is one of the many people working to ensure sailors and their families are safe during Tropical Storm Hermine.
“We push out as much information as we can -- what’s happening with the storm, get your family’s emergency plans together,” said Millican.
Action News Jax spoke exclusively with Millican about how Naval Station Mayport secures its boats and ships.
“Small crafts in the basin have already been moved and put in safe shelters,” Millican said.
The larger ships are tied down with extra mooring and Navy helicopters will also be moved to a safe shelter.
Millican said there are people going around looking for equipment near the piers that needs to be tied down so it does not blow away and hurt someone.
“Everything’s just being cleaned up,” Millican said. "We want to reduce that hazard to property or personnel for stuff that might get blown around."
He said they’re are also warning families to prepare in case the electricity goes out for a few days.
