New Clay County school opens with S.T.E.A.M. program, enhanced security

ORANGE PARK, Fla. — The new Discovery Oaks Elementary School houses Clay County Schools' new S.T.E.A.M. program, It’s the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics curriculum with a new letter and subject.

“We had a good experience with STEAM, now we are adding arts into the program and embedding it into the content,” Superintendent Addison Davis said.

Discovery Oaks and the rest of Clay Schools are also home to enhanced security plans.

Action News Jax has learned the new measures include all classrooms are locked when students are in them. Every school has an individual emergency plan, and must conduct several drills (including practice lockdowns) several times a year.

There are now 31 new armed guards in Clay County elementary schools that completed at least 144 hours of firearms training as well. Resources to keep all 850 students at Discovery Oaks Elementary School, and more than 36-thousand students district-wide, safe.
