Officers investigating two in-custody deaths in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two people died while in custody at the Duval jail on Tuesday.

A woman in her 30s was found unresponsive in an isolation cell on the first floor at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office pre-trial detention center.

Officers said a correctional officer found the woman unresponsive just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday while conducting a wellness check.

Officers and medical personnel performed life-saving procedures and took her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:32 p.m.

The woman was placed in the isolation area that is reserved for people they believe may harm themselves.

Officers conduct the wellness checks every 15 minutes, according to JSO.

The woman had been in custody since Dec. 26 at 4:37 p.m.

Officers said an autopsy will determine how she died.

A second person, a man in his 60s, died after banging his head into a glass wall in a mental health area on the 6th floor of the jail.

JSO said correctional officers were called to the area after the man began banging his fists on a glass wall in a common area.

Officers told him to go back into his cell, where he sat down and started banging his head against the wall. He passed out and fell forward, according to JSO.

Officers and medical personnel performed life-saving techniques and took him to the hospital. He was pronounced dead at 4:39 p.m.

Officers said the man had been in JSO care since Nov. 7 at 8:11 p.m.
