A man who police said shot his ex-girlfriend at the Putnam County Health Department turned himself into authorities.
All Palatka schools were on lock down as officers searched for Anthony "Tony" Maldonado, after the shooting in the parking lot of the health department building on Kennedy Street off Crill Avenue.
Officers escorted students to their rides and buses were released a few at a time as officers searched for the suspect.
Maldonado's ex-girlfriend had a restraining order against him and they had a child together, according to police.
She was shot at close range and officers are still trying to recover a weapon.
Schools that were put on lockdown include:
- Oberturf 6th grade Center
- E. H. Miller School
- James A. Long Elementary
- Jenkins Middle
- Kelley Smith Elementary
- Mellon Elementary
- Moseley Elementary
- Palatka High School
- Putnam Academy of Arts and Sciences Charter School
- Putnam Ed High School Charter School
Other schools in Putnam County were on modified lockdown at principals' discretion.
The Georgia-Pacific saw and paper mill in Palatka was also on precautionary lockdown because of an unrelated shooting in Clay County.
