Parent carrying concealed weapon detained at Jacksonville elementary school, officials say

REPORT: Julington Creek man sexually batters juvenile at community pool

Duval County Public Schools released a statement announcing a parent was detained and issued a notice to appear citation after they were seen on the Beauclerc Elementary School campus carrying a concealed weapon.

According to DCPS, staff and students were never threatened.

"With or without a valid concealed weapons license, it is illegal to have a weapon on a public school campus with limited exceptions," DCPS said in the statement.

“This incident gives us the opportunity to remind all parents, students and anyone else visiting a Duval County Public School – do not bring your weapons on campus,” said Duval County Public Schools police director Micheal Edwards.  “We will not tolerate weapons on our campuses.”

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office was at the school during the time of the incident and detained the parent.

DCPS also said a school safety assistant will be the person handling similar situations in the future.

“We are both vetting and training these candidates beyond the requirements of law,” Edwards said. “I am confident that our staff will be capable of dealing with these types of circumstances in the future.”

Mom & Dad, don't let this be YOU.
