GLEN ST. MARY, Fla. — Deputies are investigating the murder-suicide of a couple who were about to celebrate their 41st anniversary.

Deputies say Robert Combass, 62, shot and killed his 59-year-old wife, Helen.

Neighbors are in disbelief and trying to figure out why their neighbor would kill his wife inside their Glen St. Mary home.

“Can’t believe it,” neighbor Debra Mullins said.

“Why or what, I don’t know,” said Jill Leatherwood, another neighbor.

Neighbors tell Action News Jax the couple was quiet, but loved by many.

“They were precious people,” Mullins said.

Deputies say Combass shot and killed his wife while she was sleeping.

They say he called dispatch and told them he killed his wife and cat. While still on the phone, deputies say he told the dispatcher, “Goodbye,” and then shot himself.

Investigators say family members told them the two loved each other very much and were about to celebrate 41 years of marriage on Monday.

They also told deputies there had never been any domestic abuse between the two. But recently, the 62-year-old husband developed medical issues.

“He was sick. That’s the only thing that remotely makes sense,” Leatherwood said.

“The only time he would come out is to go to the doctor,” Mullins said.
