A man was killed when someone opened fire on an SUV at a busy intersection in North Jacksonville on Tuesday.
Family and friends gathered at Dunn Avenue and Haverford Road after the man was killed in the shooting just before noon. On Wednesday night, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office identified the man killed as 35-year-old Ronald Harvey Simms.
There were several bullet holes in a blue SUV. Police said Simms died at the scene. People at the scene tell Action News Jax the man was married and had a studio nearby.
“My heart just stopped. I just stopped what I was doing and came right over,” said Terrell Butler, a friend of the man shot. "I was shocked because he was a good guy."
That shock quickly spread across family and friends. Some of them cried, others hugged each other after finding out what happened. Police dusted the SUV for finger prints and blocked off the area, to look for evidence.
“It’s hard to swallow,” said Butler.
Hard to swallow and unbelievable because the shooting happened in broad daylight and near the busy stretch of Dunn Avenue.
“It’s very disturbing. It’s saying that people don’t care anymore. It’s very senseless, what’s going on now and what happened,” said Butler.
Officials have not said if there is a suspect in the shooting. If you know anything about the shooting, call CrimeStoppers.
