Pulse survivor speaks out about gun violence after Jacksonville Beach shooting

A man from Jacksonville who survived the Pulse nightclub shooting spoke out about gun violence on social media after the shooting death of a 23-year-old in Jacksonville Beach.

Rodney Sumter grew up in Jacksonville. He was shot several times during the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

He posted about the shooting death of Glen McNeil Jr. on Friday, two days after McNeil was shot and killed at Jacksonville Beach.

Sumter said McNeil was good friends with his little brother, and he watched the two of them grow up together throughout middle and high school.

"From 6th to 12th, Gleet was always a standout receiver, but one thing I admired about him was that it never changed his ego," Sumter wrote.

He said McNeil was a funny kid with an infectious personality. He respected his elders and had good manners.

"Glen lost his life to such a senseless crime and I pray justice is served back home," Sumter wrote. "I'm not saying he was better than anyone else, but this particular crime affected the entire Southside community of Jacksonville, which shows how awesome of a guy he truly was."

Sumter went on to say that gun violence is getting out of hand and that people need to do their part as a community to protect one another.

"I see way too many fights instigated on social media, with a hand full of people around recording rather than doing their part in protecting one another," he wrote. "Please do better as a whole, and help guide these younger kids into the right direction. It starts at home with the parent or legal guardian. Don't let your lack of guidance and nurturing have a cause and effect on someone else's life who was trying to do better for themselves."
