JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Police are searching for a suspect after a woman was found shot dead inside a car, where her young son was also found unharmed on Saturday night.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office closed the intersection of Normandy Boulevard and Lenox Avenue during the investigation.
JSO said the woman is in her 20s and the boy, who police say is her son, is 2 to 3 years old.
"There was a small child that is apparently the victim's child that was in the vehicle ... that child has been given to family members," said JSO Sgt. Jay Farhat.
For much of the evening, police were taking pictures, even looking for evidence from the top of nearby buildings. JSO said they don't know where the shooting happened at this point, but are questioning two people who they say gave conflicting statements.
"We need to get them downtown and sort it out as soon as possible because time is of the essence at this point," Farhat said.
People gathered at the scene, concerned and saddened by the magnitude of the crime and the fact that a young boy will be without his mother.
"That's ridiculous. Something's gotta be done about all this," said neighbor Ken Sanderson.
