Suspected burglar shot by 19-year-old woman, arrested

A 21-year-old man who was shot by a woman during a home invasion in Jacksonville is facing several charges.

Police say Kyle Dashun Williams, 21, kicked down the door of an apartment and was shot by a 19-year-old woman who was alone inside.

It happened just after 6 p.m. Wednesday at The Park at Via Veneto in Regency.

“The fact that the suspect got hurt is, in a way, justice served,” said Brandon Johnson, who was visiting a friend at the apartment complex.

Johnson said the incident troubled his friend.

“Absolutely, you know she lives out here and she didn't like the idea that someone's house was broken into,” said Johnson.

Police said after being shot in the leg, Williams took off with another man and drove to a CareSpot on Monument Road to get help for his wound.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrested him at the CareSpot and took him to UF Health for treatment.

Officers originally said as many as three men broke into the woman's home but now they believe Williams was by himself or with just one accomplice.

Action News Jax learned Williams has a couple of driving infractions on his record, as well as a no contest plea to a drug charge in 2013.

Maintenance workers were seen fixing the victim’s door Thursday, but she may be moving soon. The property manager said she’s being allowed out of her lease so she can feel safe.

“Hopefully, he'll learn his lesson and some others can learn from his mistake,” said Johnson.

The suspect lives about ten minutes from the apartment complex, according to the address on the police report. The property manager said that the victim’s boyfriend said they didn’t know the suspect.

Action News Jax Crime and Safety Expert Ken Jefferson said the victim’s actions are backed by a law that says she can use deadly force if she perceives her life is threatened.

“This falls under the palace law: your home is your palace, and you have the right to protect yourself as well as your family,” said Jefferson.

JSO’s crime mapping system shows that in the last four weeks alone, there have been 26 incidents of crimes like burglary, assault and vehicle break-ins within a half mile radius from the apartment complex.

Williams has several charges, including battery and burglary.

A judge has now ordered a $150,000 bond for Williams, as well as no contact with the victim. It’s unclear if JSO has been able to identify an accomplice.
