Manager shot, killed after arriving at work, police said

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Police are investigating after the manager of a freight liner operation center was shot and killed outside work on Monday morning.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to the 700 block of Scotia Road, which is west of the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and West Beaver Street.

Officers arrived and found a man dead from bullet wounds. The man was later identified by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office as 50-year-old Marty Coffey of Callahan.

JSO said Coffey arrived at work, got out of his car and was approached by someone who shot him.

JSO didn't say how many times Coffey was shot. People in the area told Action News Jax reporter Russell Colburn that they heard about four or five shots around 6:30 a.m.

Police are still looking for the gunman, who appeared to have left the scene in a small white car. No other suspect information is available.

According to a representative at Old Dominion Freight Line, the company's service center manager was shot and killed.

Old Dominion released the following statement on Coffey's death:

"We are deeply saddened by the horrific event this morning at our Jacksonville, FL service center.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family as well as all of the Old Dominion family members located in our Jacksonville location, as they cope with this tragedy."

Police said it is too early in the investigation to say if someone who worked with Coffey is believed to be a suspect.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS. You can remain anonymous and receive a possible reward of up to $3,000.
