ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — UPDATE July 7, 2016: The Florida Highway Patrol initially released the incorrect name of the victim. The victim in the deadly crash is 17-year-old Christian Meier of Ponte Vedra Beach.
A 17-year-old has reportedly died after he was hit by a car while biking on the Palm Valley Bridge in St. Johns County on Wednesday afternoon.
The teen, identified by the Florida Highway Patrol as Christian Meier of Ponte Vedra Beach, was riding his bike at the foot of the bridge around 5:20 p.m. when he was hit.
The driver, who is in their late 20s, was driving eastbound in a Toyota Corolla and had just crossed the Intercoastal Waterway, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The teen was traveling eastbound on the sidewalk and made a left turn in front of a the car.
"As the Toyota approached the crosswalk that crosses over Palm Valley Road, the bicyclist failed to observe the oncoming traffic and began to ride across Palm Valley Road," in front of the Toyota, the FHP report detailed.
The driver who hit Meier is not being cited at this time and DUI is not suspected in the crash.
