GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. — Voluntary evacuations have been issued for areas of Georgia.
Officials said voluntary evacuations have been issued for St. Simons, Jekyll Island, Sea Island and Little St. Simons Island because of Hurricane Matthew. An evacuation of the mainland is not anticipated.
Gov. Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency for Glynn County and 12 surrounding counties.
All Glynn County public schools will be closed Thursday and Friday. After-school activities on Wednesday have been canceled.
“At this point, the National Weather Service is not confident at all in the storm track or the timing of its approach to Glynn County,” said Glynn County Schools Superintendent Howard Mann. “The NWS said that a shift in the storm’s track farther west would increase local impacts dramatically. Coastal residents should take this storm very seriously and heed the advice of local emergency management officials.”
