A woman was arrested after she left her 5-year-old son in a car at a Palatka Walmart for more than 40 minutes, police said.
Palatka police officers were called to Walmart around 4 p.m. on Sunday after loss prevention officers reported a child was left in a car unattended.
Officers found the 5-year-old boy sitting in the back of a car that was registered to 27-year-old Talisha Martin of Interlachen.
The engine was running and the air conditioner was on, but it was blowing warm air.
When officers asked the boy if he was hot, he said yes and that he was scared because his mommy left him.
The child was kept safe in the loss prevention office while officers tried to contact Martin.
They found her when she walked outside to her car.
An officer said her speech was stuttered and slurred.
She did not realize her child was no longer in the car until the officer asked her if something was missing.
Officers determined the boy was left in the car for more than 40 minutes.
Martin was arrested for leaving a child un-attended in a motor vehicle.
She was transported to the Putnam County Jail and held on a $500 bond.
The Department of Children and Family Services was contacted and the boy was released to his father.
