YouTube video shows Mercedes swerving, nearly driving off Intracoastal Bridge

A Jacksonville motorist with a dashcam says he recorded video of a driver who nearly drove off the Intracoastal Bridge on Beach Boulevard.

In the video, the driver of a white Pontiac Grand-Am appears to brake-check a black Mercedes that was rapidly approaching in the eastbound lane.

The black Mercedes swerved to the right and struggled to stabilize the car before speeding away.

The incident was filmed as Jacksonville deals with a rash of road-rage incidents in recent weeks.

On Monday, a man had a 8-year-old child in his car when he shot at another car in a high-speed chase, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Roderick Hobbs, 31, was arrested after police say he began driving aggressively while holding a gun in his left hand out the window.

Earlier this month, a truck driver from New Jersey was killed on I-10 he was shot by another trucker, police said. No arrest has been made in that case.

A survey by AAA, found 80% of drivers rank aggressive driving at the top of their concerns behind the wheel.

Our experts say it’s one of the leading causes of road rage and we have already seen at least three cases of shootings in our area stemming from dangerous driving.

“Oh Wow!” That’s how Joy Dickinson responded, when we showed her the video of a driver speeding across the Intracoastal Bridge. An Action News Jax viewer sent us the video of a car passing him and then almost losing control near the edge of the bridge.

It’s a frightening but not surprising situation for Dickinson, “(Is that scary to you?) Yes. Because even I have been cut off, they swerve in and they swerve over,” said Dickinson.

“He’s traveling at a high rate of speed,” said Action News Jax Crime and Safety Expert Ken Jefferson.

“As he passed, the lane closed with cars being there and had it been one second earlier, that could have been disastrous,” said Jefferson.

AAA said 55 percent of Florida drivers feel aggressive drivers are a very serious threat. The report claims male drivers between the ages of 25-34 years old are involved in the highest number of fatalities related to aggressive driving.

Jefferson said if you experience an aggressive driver, don’t make eye contact, but call police and keep driving.
