JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — 10/9/2020 5:06 p.m. UPDATE:
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said at approximately 2 p.m. school police officers reported that someone was shot on campus.
According to police, witnesses were able to point out a suspect.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident. Police did not give the name of the suspect but did say he was a student and 18-years-old.
The suspect will be charged with a felony for having a gun on campus. More charges are pending.
The victim of the shooting was an 18-year-old male. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
It is unclear if the shooting was accidental or not.
The principal of Ribault High School, Dr. Greg Bostick, said that random backpack checks happen today. Bostick also mentioned, beginning on Monday students will go through metal detectors daily.

Here is a copy of the communication sent to Ribault High School parents from the principal, Dr. Gregory D. Bostic.
"Good Afternoon Ribault High School families,
This is Principal Bostic calling to make you aware of a very serious incident on our campus this afternoon involving the discharge of a firearm.
This discharge of the firearm resulted in one student being shot in the arm and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
As you know, firearms on campus are strictly prohibited, and the individual who brought the firearm is in custody. The incident is under investigation by the Jacksonville Sherriff’s Office and the Duval County School Police.
However, because of this incident we will need to implement enhanced security protocols going forward. This will include mandatory screening of all students using metal detectors beginning on Monday.
I’m disappointed to end a great week on this note, but I wanted to make sure you are informed. Please remind your students that firearms or weapons of any type are not permitted at school.
Thanks for your cooperation and support. If you every have any feedback or questions about anything having to do with your student’s Ribault experience, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me through the school."

According to DCPS, shots were fired at Ribault High School.
One student has been injured with non-life threatening injuries and has been transported to local hospital.
The person who had possession of the firearm is in custody.
According to JSO, there have been reports of shots fired near Ribault High School.
The exact location of where the reported shots is unknown at this time.
