Cleanup complete, all lanes back open after I-75 chemical spill in Alachua County

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE 10:20 p.m.- FHP announced that the cleanup is complete and all lanes have reopened.

Florida Highway Patrol says Interstate 75 is closed in both directions in Alachua County following a morning crash.

A tanker carrying hazardous material overturned near mile marker 391, closing northbound and southbound lanes.

All southbound traffic is being routed off at mile marker (US Hwy 441 High Springs exit) and all northbound traffic is being routed off at mile marker 390 (SR 222 exit).

Several alternate routes exist, including U.S. 41 and U.S. 441.

FHP said the incident began just before 6 a.m. on the southbound side of I-75. Investigators found that it was raining at the time and two tractor-trailers, two pickup trucks, one SUV, and one passenger vehicle were involved in the crash.

Troopers said at this time, it appears that one of the vehicles hydroplaned, beginning the series of reactions and collisions.

The material the truck was carrying, liquid styrene, is colorless and has a sweet smell. FHP said the highway may be closed for up to 12 hours as crews work to remove the chemical and the vehicles involved.

As of just after 5:30 p.m., the interstate was still closed.
