St. Augustine police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead on Thursday evening.
The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. near Arricola Avenue on Anastasia Island.
Police say it was a domestic incident and that they are questioning two women. One of them is a witness, the other is considered a person of interest, according to police.
The scene is located about a block off of Anastasia Boulevard on Anastasia Island.
A witness to the shooting said, “He just dropped and started screaming.”
Action News Jax spoke with a man who didn’t want to reveal his identity. He said he was yards away when the shooting happened.
“I saw the moment where he received the impact of the bullet and he fell on the ground and the girlfriend was trying to keep him, you know, alive,” the witness said.
Mark Samson, with the St. Augustine Police, said “Fire rescue comes to the scene and they are not able to revive a male.”
“I heard the gunshot and I saw him receiving the impact,” a witness said.
Samson said the shooting “seems to be domestic-related.”
The witness we spoke to said he heard arguing, and that’s what brought him to the area.
“A lady was yelling, 'I cannot open the door. I cannot open the door,'” a witness said.
A few moments later, he said the shooting happened. Now, as police try to figure out what exactly happened, the witness wants people in the city to do more to prevent crime.
“There’s not enough cameras in the city,” the witness said.
