For the first time in history West Augustine is participating in St. Augustine’s Nights of Lights celebration.
Although it won’t start until next month, it’s being called Light Up West King Street.
Organizers told Action News Jax this event was created to help connect that side of town to St. Augustine’s downtown.
More than 20 businesses will light up West Augustine from U.S. 1 to Pellicer.

Murphy Leathers and his wife Lindsay have been in business for only six months, cooking up comfort food like chicken pot pie and meatloaf, in West Augustine.
“It’s a good spot and I think it’s a spot where it’s beginning to be the trendy and hip spot in St. Augustine,” Murphy Leathers, owner of Murf’s Homestyle-to-Go, said.
Now this little area will be filled with more than 3,000 lights ready to illuminate the street in December, drawing people into shops they’ve never seen before.
“We have a big wall of herbs and spices. We have nuts, grains, seeds, legumes, a lot of bulk items, oils, sweeteners,” Jared Bastin, co-owner the Local Refillery, said.
Tyrone Bennett teamed up with the owner of the cheese wheel to organize this area’s first ever Light Up West King Street.
“I always drive past during the holiday season, and it is dark, there’s no traffic here. They get business, but they don’t get the business of downtown,” Tyrone Bennett, the organizer of Light Up West King Street, said.
Bennett said normally West Augustine is always left out during the normal Nights of Lights celebration, but not this year thanks to the help of private donations and community support.

“We’ve been a little bit of the red-headed stepchild over here, Dana Blanton, owner of Sweet City Cupcakes said. “So it’s just nice to see the area be included.”
These business owners are hopeful Light Up West King Street will give this side of town a little more exposure and a little boost in business.
“I think we’re very excited. I mean, it’ll be nice to have this part of town highlighted and recognized and possibly bring some of that traffic,” Lindsay Leathers, owner of Murf’s Homestyle-to-Go, said.
Light Up West King Street starts on Dec. 4 at 4 p.m.
