Veteran hit by car, business could close

A local veteran recovering from being hurt in a crash could lose his business that puts fellow vets to work.

Vets Recycling Inc was just getting off the ground when the company's owner was hit by a car last fall.

David Engler reached out to Action News Jax so we could let our viewers know about his desperate fight to save his company and the jobs it created.

“I’m coming back if I have to crawl I will make this thing work,” Engler said.

Engler may have picked up this raw grit during his time in the Army. He's in recovery and has to use a walker. Engler said someone ran him over last September.

“When he hit me, he tore 2 tendons in my back, bruised my spine and paralyzed from the waist down,” Engler said.

Engler is regaining the use of his arms and legs, but he said his mind is on his company.

Engler had just opened up his company in Springfield when we last spoke to him in December 2014. It put 9 vets to work and was set to add more when the incident happened.

Now the doors are temporarily closed, the vets laid off and Engler said he's losing $8,000 to $10,000 a month.

“It gets to the point where you just can’t recover when you’re losing the money were talking about,” Engler said.

As Engler recovers, he's asking for your help to keep the Jacksonville-based company going and local veterans working.
