MIAMI — While San Francisco 49ers offensive assistant coach Katie Sowers is focused on preparing the team for its Super Bowl matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs, her history-making moment is not going unnoticed.
Sowers, 33, will be the first female and openly gay coach in Super Bowl history, CBS News reported. She is no stranger to breaking barriers. In 2017, she became the first openly gay coach in the NFL, according to The Washington Post.
This is Sowers’ second season with the 49ers and her fourth season in the NFL, according to her team biography. She previously worked with the Atlanta Falcons.
Sowers is a former athlete who played for several years in the Women’s Football Alliance, a full-contact football league for women. Sowers was featured in a Microsoft Surface ad, in which she says, "“I’m not here to just be the token female. I’m here to help us win.”
