Update 9:50 a.m. EDT Sept. 27: Michigan State Police said two people were taken into custody Tuesday morning after an undercover state trooper was shot and injured during a narcotics investigation.
The two people were not immediately identified. Police said they also found casings in an apartment.
The trooper, who was not identified, was shot as a narcotics unit was doing surveillance early Tuesday morning. He remained in critical condition later Tuesday , officials said.
Original report: According to WDIV and WJBK, the incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at a Riverview Street apartment complex on the city’s northwest side. Michigan State Police tweeted that an “undercover narcotics unit was conducting surveillance” when an “unknown suspect” opened fire, striking a male trooper. The 10-year department veteran was rushed to Sinai Grace Hospital for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds, WJBK reported.
Shortly after 5:30 a.m. EDT, police tweeted that crews were trying to “make contact with any suspects located in the building from where the shots may have been fired” and advising residents to stay in their homes.
“Don’t come out. Don’t try to see what’s going on because we are just aren’t sure where he is,” state police Lt. Mike Shaw said, according to WJBK. “And since he’s already fired at us, it’s probably not likely that he’s not going to fire at somebody walking through that neighborhood.”
He has been transported to a local hospital.
