Jacksonville — Parents with children enrolled in the Duval Virtual Instruction Academy Homeroom program have been notified by the district this week that the program will end after the current school year.
Duval County Public Schools says online instruction will still be available through the Virtual Instruction Academy going forward in the next school year, but it will be self-guided and the live component where teachers instruct students as part of the regular school day schedule will no longer be an option.
“We are informing you of this decision now so that you have time to consider the many school choice options our district offers,” the message to parents says. “The deadline to apply for a magnet school or school other than your zoned school is Feb. 28.”
If parents fail to enroll in a choice school, DCPS says their child will be re-enrolled in the neighborhood school based on their address.
In the traditional online learning option, DCPS says there is limited remote, adult supervision but the courses are monitored and guided by a teacher. Student work is self-directed and can happen any time of day. If parents feel that type of online format is the best option, the application period runs from April 4 to July 29.
