Atlanta, GA. — On Tuesday, Governor Brian Kemp announced legislation to overhaul the Citizen’s Arrest Bill.
This call comes just before the one-year anniversary of the death of Ahmaud Arbery.
Gov. Kemp referred to the death of Ahmaud as, “A viral video shocked the whole world. The horrific killing shook a Georgia community to its core.”
These changes are intended to update the vague and outdated law currently in place.
Even though change is imminent, Governor Kemp informed the public that this does not mean citizens no longer have the right to defend themselves.

He stated, “This bill repeals the current Civil War-era statute in order to prevent the terrible consequences of a vague and outdated law, and clarifies when a citizen, business owner, or law enforcement officer may reasonably detain an individual.”
The overhaul will close significant loop holes.
