PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — A 22-month-old boy is in critical condition after he was bitten by a dog in Putnam County on Monday, deputies say.
Deputies said the child went into respiratory arrest on the way to the hospital after he was bitten by a pitbull mix at a family friend's house on Melrose Landing Blvd on Monday.
The boy had injuries on his arm and face. He was revived and underwent surgery for several hours, according to deputies.
Deputies say they were told his mother was inside sleeping when he was attacked outside the house.
The homeowner called police and the child was put into a car and eventually handed over to fire rescue on the way to UF Health in Gainesville.
The dog and six other dogs found on the property were taken to an undisclosed location, deputies said.
The Florida Department of Children and Family Services was notified and is investigating along with Putnam County Sheriff's Office and animal control.
Decisions regarding criminal charges against the boy's mother or property owner will be made as the investigation progresses, deputies said.
