An 8-year-old Jacksonville boy accidentally shot and killed himself with a stolen gun in Port Orange.

Chris Scurry and his 12-year-old brother were visiting grandparents in Port Orange like they do every summer, his mother Davina Gooden said.

The boys were home with their bedridden grandfather on Friday when the gun went off.

Gooden said she doesn't know exactly what happened, only what detectives told her -- that Chris shot himself under the arm and a bullet went through his lung.

"I sent him away for a summer vacation. I'm bringing him home in a hearse," Gooden said.

Police said the gun was reported stolen from a gun manufacturer in 2009.

Gooden said Chris' 12-year-old brother tried to save him by giving him chest compressions. She says he and Chris were best friends and he is traumatized.

Gooden said Chris was also very close with his father, who died from Lymphoma in 2015.

He played football for the Moncrief Broncos and was going to start third grade at Hyde Grove Elementary in August.

Chris' family is trying to raise money to help with funeral costs.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. at Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church on Myrtle Avenue.

His mother said he'll be buried next to his father at Restlawn Memorial Park.
