If you're on the 'Do Not 'Call' list and still get unwanted calls, here's what to do

Florida's Do Not Call List now has more than 1 million Florida phone numbers on it, up from fewer than 100,000 just four years ago.

The legislature eliminated the fee to join the Do Not Call list back in 2012, leading to the 900 percent increase in sign ups.

This list prohibits sales calls or texts on landlines, cell phones, and pagers.

Aaron Keller of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says Do Not Call violations are among the top consumer complaints in the state each month.

He says the department does work to educate businesses that may not understand the law, but it is looking out for residents first.

"If you still get unwanted calls, we encourage you to reach out to our department and make sure that your number is on this list. Also, file an official complaint. If someone has violated the law, there can be an up to $10,000 fine imposed on them."

There are some exemptions to the Do Not Call registry.

Companies you have recently done business with are allowed to contact you, and charities are legally allowed to reach out to someone for donations.
