JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A crash on Interstate 295 Wednesday evening claimed the life of an 8-year-old girl.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, which temporarily blocked all southbound lanes of traffic on Interstate 295 at Dunn Avenue. Officers diverted traffic to Lem Turner Road as crews investigated.
Authorities responded at 5 p.m. to the crash. Crews were called to extricate a person around 5:15 p.m.
FHP said 19-year-old Dayshawn Brown of Jacksonville was driving north on Interstate 295 when his Dodge Caliber crossed the median, overturned and hit a Honda Accord and a Jeep Liberty, which were heading south.
Brown was transported to UF Health Jacksonville for treatment of minor injuries. A passenger in Brown's car, an 8-year-old Jacksonville girl, died at the scene. FHP said the child was not wearing a seat belt.
The 65-year-old driver and 71-year-old passenger in the Honda Accord were taken to UF Health Jacksonville for treatment of minor injures.
The 39-year-old driver of the Jeep Liberty reported minor injuries, but was not taken to a hospital, FHP said.
Charges are pending, FHP said.
