JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man said security video showed undercover officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office tackling him during a drug bust at a Northside convenience store.
But Demarcus Brown said he was never charged with a drug crime and was at the store to get something to drink.
A protest against the alleged police brutality is planned for Friday morning.
Brown said he was simply checking in on his dad after he saw the officers rush inside moments before a different man was arrested for allegedly dealing drugs.
“I'm in a choke hold saying, 'I can't breathe, I can't breathe.' Then they let up and two punches in my side then two punches in my head, they put me in handcuffs and push me up against the ice maker,” Brown said.
Before Brown enters the Ethio Food Store on the Northside, an officer was seen saying something to him and then follow Brown into the store. He admits police asked him not to go inside.
Brown was never arrested on a drug charge, but was booked on several counts including resisting an officer with violence. His attorney Rhonda Peeples Waters is working to get the charges dropped before pursuing any civil lawsuit with JSO.
JSO is aware of the complaint, and says it is an active investigation.
